Silver Eagle question
Anybody know anything about something called "fat boy" silver Eagles?
Thicker than normal Silver Eagles, minted 2005. Sounds fishy to me. Could this be true? Supposedly so thick that the mint tube doesn't close completely. How could that happen? |
Re: Silver Eagle question
Sounds fishy to me too. I don't think the mint tube ever closes completely.

Re: Silver Eagle question
It's true. There is such a thing as 2005 SAE Fat Boys. I have a roll or two of em. And yes the mint made an error and they were slightly thicker than normal. For awhile the Fat Boys carried a premium. I have no idea of the premium they carry anymore. |

Do you of know any rationale for them being thicker coins, but not wider and still the same weight? I'm confused. |
Re: Silver Eagle question
I meant to say thicker coins should be less wide, hayna? :D

Re: Silver Eagle question
I don't have a micrometer handy but I just put a 2005 reed edge to reed edge of a 2006 - no difference in width.
|
Re: Silver Eagle question
I'm told no more silver, just a bit wider rims that makes a 20 coins stack a bit too wide for the mint tubes.

Re: Silver Eagle question
Excess pressure on the die results in a thick "rim".
Think of working pizza dough. Not a great analogy but you may get my drift. |
Re: Silver Eagle question

Re: Silver Eagle question
2 bucks over is normal retail for one or a few coins. The mint gets$1.25 over to distributors (BIG guys). I pay about $1.45 over for monster boxes. Dealers to the public really do work on thin margin.

Re: Silver Eagle question
What is your opinions on the SAEs that have Miss Liberty enamled in patriotic colors. They are the only SAEs my local guy has for sale at $16.00. I have always steered away and just picked up generics while there.
